Dear Parents and/or Students,

It is a pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Mr. Andreas Hartmann. I have known Andreas since the fall 2001. My son Justin and I are taking piano lessons. Andreas was referred to us by the Indiana University School of Music as someone who would be great as instructor.

I am an educator and parent. I have taught students with severe emotional disabilities, I have been the Disabilities Services/Mental Health Coordinator for a Head Start program that enrolled approximately 320 students, I have a masters in school administration, and a doctorate in special education. When I looked for a piano instructor for my son and myself, I set very high standards. Andreas met and exceeded those standards.

When you meet Andreas, you will note immediately, his warm and caring personality as well as his easy smile. He has a great sense of humor. He has the ability to teach a subject, which is an elective for most students and for younger students a requirement of the parents only. Yet, he has the ability to make the lessons seem important, self-fulfilling, and highly motivating.

Andreas has taught us about music theory and has helped us to look at piano pieces in a way that makes them easier to play and read. We, me in particular, looked at a piano as a conglomeration of notes, which I needed to know how to play. Andreas, in less than a year, has taught both my son and myself how to look at a piece of music in several ways. It has made playing more enjoyable for both my son and myself.

Andreas’ intellectual abilities are complemented by his excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills, he is very articulate. I suspect that all of his students would find him approachable and supportive. I am confident that Andreas would set high standards for his students as he has for us and himself.
