To whom it may concern:                                                                                                              August 20, 2002

It is with great pleasure that I have the opportunity to recommend my colleague Mr. Andreas Hartmann (soon to be Dr.).  I have known Mr. Hartmann for the past 8 years during which I have had many opportunities to see him play in recital, as well as teach in numerous master classes.  I have been most impressed by the quality of musicianship and the dedication to music, which he exhibits wherever he goes.

As a pianist, his technique is formidable, his style of playing distinguished, fluent, singing, and enrapturing to hear and see.  The many nuances of sound, the colors he creates on the piano are wondrous.  His ability to capture the essence of a composer, to frame a style for different composers such that the sound you hear is Chopin or Mozart, not that of any particular pianist, is a rare and true gift.  A recital of his is an event and one to look forward to.

As a piano teacher at the Levine School of Music, I have had the opportunity to meet many great teachers over the years.  Mr. Hartmann ranks among the best.  He has consistently produced students of a very high caliber, and often at a very young age.  The students I have met, have an exceptional understanding of the theoretical elements of music, as well as an above average, even exceptional technique and musicality.  He is an asset to any program he chooses to teach in.

I believe his credentials, education, and employment at Indiana University as both an Associate Instructor of Piano and as a faculty member of the Pre College Program speak for themselves.  There are many others who share my opinion.

Sincerely,
Matthew Van Hoose, Coordinator of Piano, Southeast Site, Levine School of Music
