Extensive research and practice at leading schools of music has shown that a thorough background in the structure and language of music is crucial to the development of proper musicianship.  I firmly believe that every student I teach should have the opportunity to develop musical literacy at the same time as developing the technical skills necessary for playing the instrument.

It is difficult for children to come to terms with the complexity of notation.  If one understands the structure of music, and how it is written,  music becomes a much more accessible and positive experience.

Years of teaching have shown me that the best way to address these skills is to take the theory out of the one-on-one private lesson, and provide it in a format that children are familiar with--a weekly class that allows them to explore the theory of music with peers.

In addition, we will explore the fundamentals of musical literacy and appreciation, with discussion of important composers, and musical history.

Material is covered in a unit-based format, allowing students to miss the occasional class for other obligations, without severely impacting their ability to progress.

Adults who are taking piano lessons can arrange to forgo the class theory lessons.  If there are enough adults showing interest we can schedule a separate theory class for adults only.
